This app has a very special place in my heart (and on my phone). Imagine getting tons of cash back on the groceries you already are buying. Imagine completing fun bonuses and challenges that earn you real money just for doing your usual grocery shopping! Enter: Ibotta.
What is Ibotta, you may ask? Well simply put, it is a really sleek, modern, easy-to-use cash back app that gives you cash back for your groceries. Before you do your shopping, check through Ibotta’s extensive list of stores and rebates on tons of items, and select which rebates you want to use. The best part is, the items tend to be rather common items that you’d normally buy!
Now, it’s business as usual. Just shop as you normally would, and when you get back home, the magic happens.
Whip out your phone, open the Ibotta app, and click the “redeem” icon in the bottom center of the screen. You will then be asked to scan the items barcodes of the items that match the rebates you chose and then scan the picture of your receipt.
Then, just wait. Almost immediately, your account will be credited with the sum of yours selected rebates. Then, simply wait until your balance reaches $20.00 (if you stick with it, it doesn’t take long), and then you can cash out your account for PayPal credit, or a huge variety of gift cards.
It really is as easy as that. Still not convinced? Keep reading!
As of July 5th, 2017, with about 4 months of use, I have earned $126.25 dollars, with $11.75 still pending within my account. That is a very significant amount of money saved within a year. If you use the app consistently, you could likely save hundreds on groceries per year.
Additionally, Ibotta makes it really easy to earn extra cash. They have monthly bonuses where you can earn extra cash. For example, Ibotta ran a promotion where if you redeem 5 rebates before the 4th of July, then you’ll get an extra two bucks. They are constantly running promotions like that, so it really becomes easy for your total to add up.
Furthermore, they will do product promotions where if you buy one product several times, or if you purchase two complimentary products (like a certain brand of chips and a certain brand of salsa), you’ll get a bonus for that as well! I just earned an extra two bucks plus the normal cash back for purchasing two car detailing products that I was running low on.
However, there are a few downsides that you should be aware of.
Some people may not like how you have to wait until you have a balance of at least $20.00 before you can cash out. While I agree it would be nice to cash out whenever you want like some other apps, it really isn’t a big deal because, as mentioned previously, there are tons of way to make extra cash.
Additionally, you must be sure to read the fine print of the rebates carefully. Some rebates require you buy an item that is a particular number of ounces, or a certain size. Also, it may also require that you buy several items for the rebate to qualify (for example, you’ll get .75 cents but you have to buy two candy bars). In order to aid users with this issue, the app boasts a feature that allows the user to scan the barcode of an item in advance to quickly check if the item qualifies.
Another issue with the app is that sometimes the stores do not have certain rebates that show up in the app. For example, my girlfriend and I spent about thirty minutes wandering around Target to find a jar of ready-to-eat cookie dough that was on the app, and we could not find it anywhere.
However, all of these issues are easily reconciled by the sheer ease of use and brilliance of this app.
Thus, I would wholeheartedly recommend you download and give it a try. I can’t see how saving money wouldn’t be on everyone’s agenda!
